Unlocking Heritage was a reminder of how deeply our
historic places shape identity, community and help provide
social value. The event highlighted not only the richness
of our built heritage but also the growing challenge of
protecting it in a changing climate.
The discussions highlighted the many issues placing
increasing pressure on historic buildings, through
overheating, extreme weather, moisture and material
degradation. Strengthening these assets for the future
sometimes means interventions that alter or
even harm elements of the original fabric. The discussions
made clear that responsible stewardship now requires
navigating this tension with honesty, sensitivity, and a
willingness to adapt.

I came away inspired by the shared commitment to
safeguarding heritage in a way that respects its past while
preparing it for the realities ahead. It is a collective effort,
one grounded in partnership, thoughtful design, and a belief
that resilience and heritage can and should coexist.
